Bid-Ask Spreads and Volume: The Role of Trade Timing

چکیده

I formulate a stylized Glosten-Milgrom model of financial market trading in which people are allowed to time their trading decision. The focus of the analysis is to understand people’s timing behavior and how it affects bidand offer-prices and volume. Assuming heterogeneous quality of information, not all informed traders choose to trade immediately but some chose to delay, although they expect public expectations to move against them. Compared to a myopic, no-timing setting, first movers with timing have better quality information. Contrary to casual intuition this behavior lowers bid-ask spreads early on and increases them in later periods. Price-variability and total volume in both periods combined decrease. A numerical analysis shows that with timing the spreads are very stable (though decreasing), and that volume is increasing over time. Moreover, with timing the probability of informed trading (PIN) increases between periods. JEL Classification: C70, D80, D82, D84, G14.

Market making with asymmetric information and inventory risk

Market makers in over-the-counter markets often make offsetting trades and have significant market power. We develop a market making model that captures this market feature as well as other important characteristics such as information asymmetry and inventory risk. In contrast to the existing literature, a market maker in our model can optimally shift some trade with the informed to other discr...

Managerial Timing and Corporate Liquidity: Evidence from Actual Share Repurchases

We investigate the timing of open market share repurchases and the resultant impact on firm liquidity. Using Hong Kong’s unique disclosure environment, we identify the exact implementation dates for over 5,000 equity buybacks. We find that managers exhibit substantial timing ability. Consistent with the information-asymmetry hypothesis, bid-ask spreads widen and depths narrow during repurchase ...

No. 2002-30 AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF THE TRADING INTENSITY IN INFORMATION DISSEMINATION ON THE NYSE

Asymmetric information models predict comovements among trade characteristics such as returns, bid-ask spread, and trade volume on one hand and the trading intensity on the other hand. In this paper we investigate empirically the two-sided causality between trade characteristics and trading intensity. We apply a VAR-model for returns, bid-ask spread, trade volume, and trading intensity to trans...

Non-stationarity in Bid-ask Spreads: the Role of Tick Size Reduction

Mean-reversion of spreads follows directly from an error correction quote adjustment process plus a random walk theory of the quote midpoint as an implicit efficient price. In such a model, buys and sells are equally likely, and the trade direction is informationless. With asymmetric information and strategic trading, however, order flow is serially correlated, and the spread incorporates a tim...

Intraday Trading Patterns: The Role of Timing

In a dynamic model of financial market trading multiple heterogeneously informed traders choose when to place orders. Better informed traders trade immediately, worse informed delay — even though they expect the public expectation to move against them. This behavior causes distinct intra-day patterns with decreasing (L-shaped) spreads and increasing (reverse L-shaped) volume and probability of ...
